03 — Local import rules
What you need to know about importing to Ireland.
Ireland is one of our fastest and most straightforward routes. Ireland drives on the left, making UK right-hand drive vehicles directly compatible. The main cost to plan for is Vehicle Registration Tax (VRT), which is calculated as a percentage of the vehicle's Open Market Selling Price (OMSP) in Ireland.
Right-hand drive
Yes — Ireland drives on the left; UK right-hand drive vehicles are the standard configuration
Maximum vehicle age
No formal age limit for import (vehicles 40+ years old are exempt from NCT)
Required documentation
Customs declaration (MRN number) · Certificate of Conformity (CoC) · Original registration documents (V5C) · Proof of ownership · Commercial invoice or sale agreement · Motor insurance certificate
Customs duty
Standard EU customs tariff applies on post-Brexit UK imports; rate varies by vehicle classification and country of original manufacture — confirm with Revenue.ie
VAT / local tax
23% VAT (standard Irish rate on CIF value)
Registration cost
Vehicle Registration Tax (VRT): 7%–37% of Open Market Selling Price depending on CO2/NOx emissions; VRT assessment appointment fee €60; NCT roadworthiness test €60
Roadworthiness inspection
Yes — National Car Test (NCT) required for vehicles 4+ years old; must be booked within 7 days of arrival; test takes 40–60 minutes
Notable restrictions
Vehicle must be registered within 30 days of arrival. VRT must be paid on registration — this is typically the most significant cost when importing to Ireland. CO2 and NOx emissions classification determines VRT band.
Port clearance time
Same day to 7 business days customs clearance; 30-day deadline for full registration
Buyer note
VRT can add substantially to the final cost — use Revenue.ie's VRT estimator with the vehicle's OMSP to calculate before purchase.
