03 — Local import rules

What you need to know about importing to Jamaica.

Jamaica drives on the left, making UK right-hand drive vehicles immediately compatible. Customs processing is managed through the Jamaica Customs Agency (JCA), with a mandatory pre-shipment inspection that must be completed before loading in the UK.

Right-hand drive

Yes — permitted without restriction

Maximum vehicle age

6 years from year of manufacture

Required documentation

Import Licence (Trade Board Limited) · Pre-Shipment Inspection (PSI) Certificate · Bill of Lading · Commercial Invoice · Title or Export Certificate · Tax Compliance Certificate (TAJ)

Customs duty

10–20% (varies by vehicle type and engine size)

VAT / local tax

General Consumption Tax (GCT) 17.5%

Registration cost

Approx. JMD 4,500–6,000 (Certificate of Fitness + Motor Vehicle Licence Duty)

Roadworthiness inspection

Yes — Pre-Shipment Inspection (PSI) is mandatory and must be obtained in the UK before loading. Post-import Certificate of Fitness inspection is required before registration.

Notable restrictions

Individual importers are limited to one motor car per 3-year period. Salvaged or structurally damaged vehicles are prohibited. PSI certificate is valid for 30 days only; vehicles not cleared within that window require re-inspection.

Port clearance time

3–5 working days with complete documentation

Buyer note

The Pre-Shipment Inspection certificate must be obtained in the UK before the vehicle is shipped — this cannot be waived and its absence will delay clearance significantly.
