03 — Local import rules

What you need to know about importing to UAE.

Important: the UAE drives on the right and registers left-hand drive vehicles, so UK right-hand drive cars generally cannot be registered for standard road use here. We support UAE clients primarily as collectors, for free-zone holding, or for onward re-export to right-hand-drive markets. Standard imports carry 5% customs duty plus 5% VAT (roughly 10% combined). Please contact us to confirm your specific situation before ordering.

Right-hand drive

Important — the UAE drives on the right and uses left-hand drive vehicles. UK right-hand drive vehicles generally cannot be registered for standard road use. We support UAE clients primarily for collectors, free-zone holding, re-export, and special cases. Please contact us to confirm your specific situation before ordering.

Maximum vehicle age

Used vehicle imports are generally restricted to under 10 years old. Vehicles over 30 years may qualify for classic status with special approval, enhanced inspection, and mileage-restricted registration.

Required documentation

Bill of Lading · Original V5C / proof of ownership · Purchase invoice · Certificate of Conformity · Insurance · Passport / Emirates ID (for residents) · Customs declaration

Customs duty

5% customs duty on the vehicle's CIF value for most standard passenger vehicles (some categories higher).

VAT / local tax

5% VAT applies, giving an effective combined rate of roughly 10% for standard vehicles.

Registration cost

Registration, testing and plate fees apply (varies by emirate). RHD road registration is generally not permitted — see restrictions.

Roadworthiness inspection

Yes — vehicle testing (e.g. RTA in Dubai) is required for any vehicle eligible for registration.

Notable restrictions

RHD vehicles generally cannot be registered for normal road use in the UAE. Suitable mainly for collectors, free-zone storage, or re-export to RHD markets. Confirm eligibility with us first.

Port clearance time

Customs clearance at Jebel Ali / Khalifa is typically efficient; free-zone handling available.

Buyer note

Because the UAE is a left-hand-drive market, UK RHD vehicles are best suited to collectors, free-zone holding, or onward re-export. Contact us to confirm the right structure for your needs before committing.
